Loy Krathong

November 10, 2011

Today is the Loy Krathong festival in Thailand. It is a festival when Thais make a lotus shaped vessel from banana leaves and float it in the rivers and canals to respect the goddess of the water. It is one of the nicest festivals in Thailand.

Many districts in Bangkok today are flooded and the authorities have told people not to float krathongs in flooded areas as the burning candle on the krathong might set light to buildings when the krathong drifts through the water. People also have been told not to launch krathongs from the banks of the main river that runs through the city-the Chao Phraya- as there is a danger from drowning. The tide is high and there are fast flowing currents as the runoff from the North flows to the sea. Accidents have happened in the past.

So there will be no lively celebration along Klong Thawi Wattana the canal near my place just the sound of a few fireworks being set off. What a damp squib.
